So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT
John Maxwell, best-selling leadership author and speaker, is famous for “adding value” to people. That’s as it should be because he is a long-time Jesus follower and former pastor. But what does it mean to “add value” to others? It’s important to understand if we are going to represent Jesus well in our sphere of influence because the ability to represent well has much to do with values and valuing.
Adding value means providing something beneficial, useful, or important to another person, ultimately making that person’s life or situation better. When we do, it is so personally fulfilling that it adds value to our own lives. How do we then add value in a manner that represents Jesus well?
We add value when we pay attention to people. We connect with them, converse with them, make eye-contact, and truly see them.
We add value when we use our influence to help others notice and value them. We willingly positively identify with them. It’s amazing how much a positive and warm introduction to others can matter.
We add value to others when we demonstrate by our actions and attitudes the positive characteristics and values of a Jesus follower. These are not preachy words or stuffy behaviors – they are honest, humble, integrity-filled choices that convey trustworthiness and welcome.
We add value when we look for praiseworthy parts of their lives and acknowledge them privately and publicly.
We add value when we share things and people that inspire us. Compelling stories and books, memorable quotes, opportunities (particularly if we can invite them to share with us), anything practical that inspires us.
We add value when we look for opportunities to encourage. Everyone struggles. The most significant positive influence in your life is someone who notices your struggle, helps you remember your capabilities, and encourages you to trust that God and His people will help you.
- These ways can all be summed up by the thing Jesus most often said He came to do – SERVE. We never influence more like Jesus than when we willingly and intentionally put aside our self-interest and priorities to meet another person’s needs. It is so significant, it makes me like Jesus and transforms ME.
